LG VL600 LTE / CDMA modem for Verizon in the wild?

You might remember that an LTE modem for Verizon passed FCC muster not long ago -- now, it seems we're getting our first glimpse of it. As is usually the case with these early devices on next-gen networks, this USB stick doesn't look quite as svelte as we'd probably like it to be, but we have little doubt that they'll get progressively thinner and sexier over the course of a year or three. And hey, in the meantime, far be it from us to steer clear of faster download speeds just because the modem's a little chubby, you know?LG VL600 LTE / CDMA modem for Verizon in the wild? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 21:36:00 EDT. EVO 4G's Android 2.2 update starts trickling out tomorrow, loads of new features and fixes in store? (update: official for August 3rd!)

We're not certain that this date is going to hold -- things like this have an uncanny tendency to slip at the last possible moment -- but we're at least hopeful to see some internal Sprint communication that they're trying to get the EVO 4G updated to Froyo as soon as tomorrow, July 30. It'd be the perfect way to kick off the weekend, wouldn't it? Turns out this is no mere 2.2 upgrade, though -- they're making a bunch of changes, too, including a host of new preloaded widgets, a flashlight mode for the camera's LED flash, light-assisted 720p video, and "improvement" to the quality of said video capture (something we specifically complained about in our review). Unfortunately, it looks like the hotspot hack might be sealed off with this update, but that really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. As we said, we're hopefully the date sticks, because Sprint has identified it as a "high priority for competitive reasons" -- in other words, these guys must be feeling the Droid heat -- but the PR is apparently going to identify the week of August 1 as the first push, so the devices getting the OTA tomorrow might just be a very small, select group to ensure that nothing spectacularly bad happens. We're pulling for you, EVO owners.

Update: It's been made official! Notifications will go out starting August 3, but Sprint's doing something extremely cool by allowing eager users to opt-in early and grab the download at their choosing. Follow the break for the full press release.Continue reading EVO 4G's Android 2.2 update starts trickling out tomorrow, loads of new features and fixes in store? Clevo W860CU 3D and ASUS G51JX-3D bring three-dee to US laptopers

NVIDIA teased us with the introduction of the 3D-ready G51JX back at Computex (you may remember it as one of the founding "3D PCs"), and now AVADirect is bringing that very machine to US soil. Said rig boasts a 15.6-inch display, Core i7-720QM processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory and a 1GB GeForce GTS 360M GPU. Better still, Clevo's W860CU offers an identically sized display, NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 285M (1GB), Core i5 or i7 CPU options and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. Both units ship with all the necessary 3D Vision components to get your 3D kick on right from the box, with the ASUS going for around $1,600 and the Clevo for $1,800. Humility is free with purchase, we're told.Continue reading Clevo W860CU 3D and ASUS G51JX-3D bring three-dee to US laptopersClevo W860CU 3D and ASUS G51JX-3D bring three-dee to US laptopers originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 03:46:00 EDT. Microsoft Considering MySpace Ad Deal: Report

Microsoft, along with Yahoo and Google, is apparently in discussions with News Corp. about possibly scoring a future advertising partnership with MySpace. That's according to a July 6 article in the Wall Street Journal, quoting unnamed "people familiar with the matter." News Corp. also owns the Wall Street Journal, by the way. Just throwing that out there.News Corp.'s existing deal with Google for MySpace--which will expire within weeks--has the search-engine giant paying $900 million to sell "small ads" on the site. But given how nobody's actually been on MySpace since early 2007, except for a few tiny bands with roughly 10 fans, apparently the traffic milestones aren't being met. Enter Microsoft and Yahoo, who are apparently willing to negotiate at a time when MySpace is trying to (yet again) retool itself into something other than a digital ghost-town.(And yes, I know--thanks to the original WSJ article--that MySpace apparently attracted 109 million unique visitors in May. That still doesn't come close to matching Facebook's 500-million-plus users; more importantly, once News Corp. started plastering MySpace with ads, it promptly lost its cachet as a destination Website for its target audience.)Microsoft has been involved in social networking for some time. It made a $240 million investment in Facebook back in 2007, and initiatives such as Bing and Windows Live Messenger have focused on integrating information from the likes of Twitter and Facebook. But that's not enough. As the early-June rumors about a possible Microsoft buyout of AOL suggested, any moves that Redmond could make to either profit from social networking--through advertising or capital investment--or increase its presence in the space--via baking others' content into its own offerings--are moves that would merit serious consideration. And I'm sure that, should a MySpace deal work itself out, Microsoft would earn itself a tidy little profit, especially considering that News Corp. will likely be forced to set lower traffic milestones. A few short years ago, the entire landscape looked very different (back then, my MySpace profile picture still had hair); now it's possible to look at potential deals like this as a snapshot of the Web's current state, where previously dominant players in one area (MySpace, social networking) find themselves battled over by the same groups of titans (Google, Microsoft). The more things change, it seems, the more they stay the same.

Nintendo: We'll Reveal 3DS Launch, Price Details in September

Nintendo has a price and launch date in mind for its upcoming 3DS video game handheld, but you'll have to wait until September 29 to get it.

According to Bloomberg Japan (via news tracker/translator Andriasang), Nintendo says it'll tell all at the end of September, including when you get it, where you can get it, how many it's planning to ship, and how much it'll cost.

Since E3, we've heard rumors the 3DS could sell for as much as $250 and even 200 in the UK, but The Official Nintendo Magazine reports that figure could actually be high. Nintendo UK's marketing manager James Honeywell apparently told ONM that while the company hasn't made any formal price announcements, "the Nintendo DSi is available for around 129.99 [and] the Nintendo DSi XL, with the larger screens, is around 159.99."

"So obviously, it's going to fit, kind of, somewhere within that kind of architecture."

The takeaway: $250 certainly doesn't "fit" in the current DSi price architecture. The U.S. DSi sells for $169.99, while the DSi XL goes for $189.99.

Call it $200 or less then?

RCA BRC3108 portable Blu-ray ships to Target, seriously undercuts Panny's DMP-B15

Remember Panasonic's DMP-B15? You know, that "world's first portable Blu-ray player" that was introduced at CES and just started shipping last month? With an $800 price tag, there's a good chance you never even let the thing enter your stream of consciousness, but we can only wish you the best of luck as you try to ignore this one. RCA has quietly started to ship its BRC3108 10-inch portable Blu-ray player, which is equipped with a rechargeable battery, integrated stereo speakers, a headphone jack, 1080p HDMI output and bundled car / AC adapters alongside a carrying bag with headrest attachment for in-car use. The mini player lists for $349.99 on Amazon, and it's already starting to appear in select Target locations. You'll notice that Amazon still shows the device as being available for pre-order, and even the Target model didn't have a shelf tag yet. That said, we're sure someone in the back can pull some strings if you wave your credit card around long enough.

Update: Looks like it's listed at $299.99 at Target -- image is after the break. Thanks, Thomas!

Keyboard Leds for Windows puts the LEDs on your system tray

Keyboard Leds is a simple, freeware application that does one thing: it adds an icon with a tiny three-square grid to your system tray, and that icon reflects the status of your keyboard LEDs. So, if you turn Caps Lock on, the middle "LED" turns white. Scroll Lock is the right one (and in case you're wondering, it still does stuff, especially in Excel), and Num Lock is the leftmost square.
It's also supposed to have an OSD feature that pops up a message saying something like "Caps Lock is on," but this feature didn't work so well for me - I'm not sure why.
At any rate, it's a handy application for those of us whose laptops tend to place the LEDs in obscure spots, make them tiny, or do away with them completely (as is often the case). Just make sure that Windows doesn't hide the icon.Keyboard Leds for Windows puts the LEDs on your system tray originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 23 Jul 2010 08:00:00 EST. What can I ask Android?

Here's a follow up to yesterday's tip, in which we learned to hold down the search button to launch Google's voice search. But what, exactly, can you ask it? Here it is, from the horse's mouth:Call <contact name> (+ <home|mobile|work>): Dial this contact. If the contact has multiple phone numbers, and you don’t specify which number to dial (i.e. “call Dad work”), you will receive an on-screen prompt to select which number.Dial <phone number>: Dial your selected number: “Dial 3-1-0-5-5-5-1-2-1-2?.Find <location>: Open a map a Google Maps displaying pins with the location(s).Specific business name: “Find Staples”, “Find McDonalds”,Type of business: “Find gas station”, “Find grocery store”, “Find yogurt”,Specific location name: “Find Disneyland”Type of location: “Find dog parks”Map of <location>: See Find, above.Directions to < location>: Open Google Maps providing driving, mass transit, biking or walking directions to your selected place from your current location. You can use the same types of locations as with Find, above.Navigate to <location>: Start Google Navigate with <location> set as the end point. You can use the same types of locations as with Find, above. General requests like “Navigate to gas station” will produce an on-screen prompt to select which local gas station.Open <application name>: Open the desired application: “Open calendar”, “Open Facebook”, “Open Battery Info”.Post buzz <message>: Generate a Google Buzz posting of your phrase. Posting will be geolocated with your current position. And again, third-party apps can add functionality. Mugtug offers beautiful, powerful sketching and image editing for the Web

Filed under: Web services, Imaging Tips, web 2.0
Mugtug is one name (and website) for two distinct, and equally impressive, image editing/creation applications:
Darkroom is a sophisticated, in-page photo "adjustment" software. Note that I don't use the word "editing." That's because you can't really make selections (unless you want to crop or mirror). You can, however, adjust any image parameter (such as white balance, exposure, contrast, or saturation) and apply specific effects. There's a live histogram, and you can also look at just one channel of the histogram.
Sketchpad is a drawing application with a complete set of tools (except that I couldn't figure out how to draw a straight line!). It's also very fast, responsive, and solid. You get gradients, swatches, multiple options per tool, and a GIMP-like interface with a draggable panel that you can move around.
What's so striking about Mugtug is that it is usable. There are keyboard shortcuts, it's fast and responsive, it's not Flash, and it really doesn't feel like a toy. When I first messed up with the drawing application, I instinctively hit Ctrl-Z to undo; it worked! I then hit it again, and it rolled me another step back. Ctrl-Shift-Z brought me forward again, just like on the desktop. That feeling extends throughout both applications.

I don't know if Mugtug will catch on as an application suite (although I do hope so), but at any rate, I think this is a prime example of where the Web is headed.Mugtug offers beautiful, powerful sketching and image editing for the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 28 Jul 2010 10:30:00 EST. Windows Phone 7 Issues Could Mirror Kin's

It's time for the Kin autopsy.Days after Microsoft discontinued its social-networking phone, much of the blogosphere is alight with competing theories over what killed the project, and what its demise means for the company's overall fortunes in the mobile space. Is Kin's death evidence of larger dysfunction within Microsoft? How exactly does someone blow the equivalent of a medium-size country's defense budget on a device that sold so poorly? And how many units did Kin sell, anyway?Over at Daring Fireball, John Gruber is claiming a "well-placed little birdie" told him that Microsoft sold 503 Kin phones before the plug was unceremoniously pulled. As pointed out on sites like Pocketnow.com, though, there are 8,810 "monthly active users" of the Kin Facebook application, for which you need either the Kin One or Kin Two. However--as yet someone else helpfully suggested--at least a portion of those users could be Microsoft employees, meaning the number of actual devices sold at retail and subsequently present in the wild could be far, far less.Imagine spending $150 million to make a summer blockbuster, and you sell only $200.50 in tickets. You can understand why a number of Microsoft employees, at least according to Mini-Microsoft, are reportedly walking around this week feeling embarrassed. In any case, Kin is dead--but nonetheless continues to overshadow Windows Phone 7, scheduled to debut near the end of this year.Personally, I think Windows Phone 7 faces a challenge (or a problem, if you want to frame it more negatively) similar to the one that killed the Kin phones. Kin died because it was overpriced, and lacking in a number of features that appealed to its target demographic; limited in its abilities, it was marooned and left to shrivel in a harsh environment--one where, for roughly the same price as Verizon's prohibitive monthly plan, you could get an actual smartphone on which you could run actual third-party applications. With Windows Phone 7, Microsoft seems very determined to push the smartphone operating system's platform alongside other company products. Its "Office" hub, perhaps understandably, revolves around programs such as SharePoint; the "Games" hub will center on Xbox; "Music" is all about Zune. That's all to the good, but Microsoft could be trying to ram through a vision of Windows Phone 7 so tied to other company products that it neglects to focus on other vital areas--namely, creating a robust ecosystem of third-party apps.Sure, enterprise users will appreciate being able to open documents on their new device (if their administrator doesn't stick them with using Windows Mobile 6.5), and an Xbox-enabled smartphone could be a potential competitor to other handheld gaming systems--but as both the iPhone and Google Android devices are demonstrating, apps are perhaps the single most crucial selling point when it comes to smartphones. But Microsoft doesn't seem to be generating a lot of momentum from the developer community for Windows Phone 7 apps. They've been pushing business-centric developers to create programs, and rumors suggest they've approached gaming developers about porting the more popular iPhone games onto the platform--but I haven't been hearing a lot of chatter from the developers themselves about building Windows Phone 7 products. And with four or five months until the smartphones launch, that presents a potentially substantial problem.Lack of applications for Windows Mobile 6.5 was a major symptom of that operating system's problems. Kin died at least partially because it stuck to a limited amount of features, and offered no path for a third-party developer with a particularly cool idea to port their product onto the device. In the spirit of avoiding those previous systems' fates, I feel that Microsoft needs to focus less on "Let's see how many of our products we can possibly squeeze onto this smartphone," and more on, "How can we build the versatile, robust mobile ecosystem that we need?"

Adobe Flash 11 will feature a proper 3D rendering engine and API

Filed under: Games, Internet, AdobeThe next version of Flash, amidst growing competition from emerging 3D-in-the-browser technologies WebGL and O3D, will feature support for 3D graphics.

But don't get too excited just yet -- we'll probably have to wait until October and the Adobe MAX 2010 conference before we find out more. There, on October 27th, a Flash player engineer will give a talk about "the next-generation 3D API coming in a future version of Flash Player." How exciting is that?!

It's an interesting move, and I feel that it's just in time too. WebGL and O3D might be exciting propositions in themselves, but they don't enjoy almost-100% saturation -- not yet at least. Every existing Web game maker uses Flash -- and you can be guaranteed that they'd rather code 3D games and applications for a platform they already intimately know.

It sure looks like Adobe isn't going to give up on Flash without a fight. First peer-to-peer transfers with 10.1, and now proper 3D. Assuming the 3D performance is good enough, we could see some very interesting FPS and MMORPG Flash games next year.Adobe Flash 11 will feature a proper 3D rendering engine and API originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 09 Jul 2010 09:00:00 EST.
